Most Holy Trinity Sunday
by Rev. Kilian McCaffrey | 05/23/2024 | Pastor's LetterThe Family of Love: The Holy Trinity is God ‘Father, Son and Holy Spirit’
Returning to Ordinary Time after the Season of Easter, the Church celebrates the unity of the Holy Spirit with the Father and the Son on the first Sunday after Pentecost.
At The Baptism of the Lord and also at The Transfiguration of The Lord, we witness through the scriptures the presence of the Holy Trinity in the world: God the Father revealing and declaring to the world His Beloved Son.
Now, at last, we have in our Gospel: The Name of God, fully revealed: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
We are baptized by name into this Name, into this Trinity of God, so becoming God’s children. As St. Paul teaches the Romans: “The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if only we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him” (Romans 8: 16-17).
We will never fully understand until we see God face to face, but we can try!
How Can We Explain the Holy Trinity?
How can you explain love? Just as love is a mystery, so the perfect union of three Divine Persons of the Holy Trinity is a mystery.
The union, the Holy Trinity, the central mystery of the God of Christianity, is complex, but can be explained simply. Clear language must be used and clear thinking deployed to grasp the Christian God.
God is love and love; love is from God. We are all made for unity and love, and we are not made for war, division and hatred.
The Trinity is greater than the sum of its parts because, through the Holy Spirit, we who are the Church are also bound up in this love. We are stronger together in the love of God.
“To Know One Person of The Trinity Is To Know All Three Persons”
I heard Dr, Peter Kreeft say this in a talk and I believe he attributed it to St. Teresa of Avila.
It is a topic we could never exhaust nor fully understand until “we see God face to face.”
Basically, it’s not that complicated: we just have to try to think as God thinks, not as Man thinks; to try to think differently and in holy, Heavenly terms. Ultimately, the sign of the Trinity is the sign of the Cross. The Cross points to the union of Heaven and Earth through the love of God for us. Through the witness of the Cross, we can learn to become humble and self-sacrificing.
Thanks to all who made last week’s Volunteer Appreciation Brunch a great success. Go Knights!
