Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
by Rev. Kilian McCaffrey | 02/20/2025 | Weekly Reflection“To you who hear I say, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.”
We all have enemies and that is a sad thing, Who is your greatest enemy? Who hates you? We all have enemies. Yes, it’s a sad thing, but unfortunately it’s true for most of us, if not for all of us. How do we react to this situation?
I honestly don’t hate anyone. I can’t say that I hate someone. I may have some problems with some people, but I don’t hate anyone, simply because Jesus tells me to love my enemies. And sometimes that’s a challenge, but He says it’s a commandment.
It seems so unfair! Unless, that is, we look at this way of life from a stewardship point of view. Then, not only does it seem doable (though challenging), it actually makes perfect sense. A steward understands clearly that all he has and all that he is — his very life — is a gift from God given to him from an unfathomable abundance of love. This changes everything! This means “my” cloak, “my” tunic, “my” money and time, when you think about it, it all of it ultimately belongs to God. He has entrusted these things to each of us in love to use for His purposes and His glory.
He is giving us a definition here of real love, a self giving love, generous love!

How Can You Love Your Enemies?
I find that through kindness it’s possible to love my enemies. This priest friend of mine from our seminary days Fr. Stu Long, who they have made the movie Father Stu about, was in that same classroom with the late Fr. Thien Dang. OSB, when he asked us directly: Fr. Thien Dang, OSB, one of the Boat People, refugees from Vietnam in the 1980’s and had had many enemies back then, told us that there are three ways you can love your enemies.
“Be kind. Be kind. And be kind.”
Think about that as you go through this week. It is a made lot easier if we let go of hate.
