A Eucharistic Retreat With The Lord
by Rev. Kilian McCaffrey | 07/18/2024 | Pastor's Letter“Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while?” (Mark 6:31). We all need a break after lots of hard work. Jesus invites us to pray, to be alone with Him. He wants each one of you to know His perfect love more intimately and personally, to develop our loving friendship with Him. Our Catholic Faith requires that we grow in our prayer life. This requires daily quiet, meditative time, free from any distractions.
St. Teresa of Avila, the Doctor of Prayer, defined contemplative prayer as: “Nothing else than a close sharing between friends; it means taking time frequently to be alone with Him Who we know loves us. Contemplative prayer seeks Him Whom my soul loves. It is Jesus, and in Him, the Father.” Most of us are familiar with vocal prayers, prayers we recite out loud at Mass and in a small groups, such as the Rosary or Chaplet. When we pray the Rosary, we can meditate quietly on one of the mysteries where God seems to be drawing our heart closer to His and inviting us to remain close to Him.
Jesus Asks the Same of You and Me: Spend Quiet Time With Him in Adoration. Every three years, we make a retreat with Our Lord Jesus Christ. The Gospel of St. Mark is very short, so the Church enriches and enhances it with the great Bread of Life Discourse, Chapter 6 of St. John’s Gospel.
This beautiful time begins next weekend. It is perfect timing, because on Tuesday, July 30th, we begin our Parish Jubilee Year, where the Church offers us the chance to celebrate our 50 years as a parish.
“A Jubilee usually lasts a year and is normally a calendar year. Our Parish Jubilee will partly coincide with the universal Jubilee of 2025, for the faithful from all over the world. Its importance is also recognized and respected by other faiths around the world.
“The Jubilee has Jewish origins, when every 50 years a year of rest of the earth was celebrated (to make crops stronger) and also the liberation of slaves, to restore equality and to reduce the distance between the rich and the poor. The beginning of the Jewish Jubilee was marked by the sound of the ram's horn, jobel in Hebrew, from which the Christian word ‘Jubilee’ is derived” (www.vatican.va).
The Jubilee Is A Special Year of Grace.
