“Jesus Was Made Known To Them In The Breaking Of The Bread.”

Why Did They Recognize Jesus Just Then?

I think it was because they saw His hands... That is, when they saw the marks of the nails on the hands of the Risen Lord. That was the final proof they needed. Last week, it was St. Thomas who He told “Bring your hand and put it INTO my side.” In other words: “Thomas, Touch My Heart.” Imagine how Thomas felt as he touched Jesus’ Sacred Heart, and the wound that lance made. Thomas’ heart must have burned with joy as he declared: “My Lord and My God.” This week, we recall how, then and now, our hearts burn within us as we wish the Lord to stay with us and as we reflect on how we can stay with the Lord in the prayerful intimacy of Eucharistic Adoration.

LORD, HELP US BURN WITH JOY in the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. It is only Jesus Christ Himself, truly present in The Most Holy Eucharist, who restores faith and builds up the Church with living stones, you and I, the Body of Christ.

The breaking of the bread is a reminder to us of the importance Christ placed on His institution of the Eucharist and of the necessity of doing this in His memory and a reminder both of the atoning sacrifice of Jesus that we celebrated at Easter and during the Triduum.

The implication of that sacrifice is that we have to walk in the way that He walked and we have to keep the commandments of God.

“In The Breaking Of The Bread.”

Three years ago, on Holy Thursday, April 1st, 2021, Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted, issued Veneremur Cernui – Down in Adoration Falling, his Apostolic Exhortation on the Most Holy Eucharist.

Bishop Olmsted begins with these words: “My beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I wish to speak to you about the most important and central teaching of our faith.

“What I share is “not too high for you.

“It is not theology that is only meant for theologians and priests. This concerns the most important reality of our lives – the saving presence of our Lord.

This is not a teaching that can be dumbed down or over simplified. This is a truth that we need to be clear and certain about. Be bold, then! Take up and read, drink in the truth, discuss and share it with others and allow Jesus, truly present in the Eucharist, to conform you further to Himself and fulfill the deepest longings of your heart.”

He continues: “From the time I was a little child, I knew Jesus was present in every Catholic Church…” When we realize that it is the Lord, our hearts burn with joy. When we spend time in Eucharistic Adoration, we bask in the presence of Jesus, we spend precious moments with Him. We can stay as long as we like with Him, our best friend.
