The Feast of The Presentation of the Lord
by Rev. Kilian McCaffrey | 01/30/2025 | Pastor's LetterToday, 40 days after Christmas, we celebrate the great Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, when Mary and Joseph brought their infant Son to the Temple in obedience to the laws of their Jewish faith. This is a beautiful and mysterious feast, with many lessons for us. This Gospel passage from St. Luke, recounting the details of the Presentation of our Lord in the Temple, teaches us a stewardship lesson through the example of St. Joseph and the Blessed Mother, who are the “Holy Parents.” “Mary and Joseph consecrate Jesus to the Father out of love and obedience. Our parents did the same with and for us at our baptism.
“The dedication is performed, making visible the deep truth that we, like Jesus, belong to God. And who recognizes this so well but the elders, Simeon and Anna, as they live their fulfillment days, they appreciate in acclamation manner their vision of The Messiah, the hope of the ages. Our seniors in wisdom reveal that true strength is not earthly vigor but in the inner fortitude that comes from God.
“Let us pray for our elders, grandfathers and grandfather in faith. May we come to a deeper greater appreciation for the elderly, giving them the care and kindness they deserve as they await the day when God alone shall choose to call them home” (Miracle of Love Rosary).
“Mary and Joseph were good stewards of the Christ Child, teaching Him to live in obedience to the faith. What a privilege and high calling we have as Catholic stewards. Take these lessons to heart and present your gifts and your young ones joyfully to the Lord” (The Catholic Steward).
